Best Way to Whiten Teeth

Patients often ask, "what is the best way to whiten my teeth?"  The answer is that it depends on the individual.  Teeth bleaching can be very effective.  Research shows the most effective and long-lasting whitening treatments are from bleaching trays that are made to fit your teeth with prescription whitener.  The effectiveness of the teeth bleaching varies from person to person.  In general, with professional whitening, you can expect to lighten your teeth several shades.  If after whitening, you still would like whiter teeth, dental ceramics such as veneers and crowns can be used to change the shape and color of your teeth to your preference.

Bleaching Vs. Crowns and Veneers

Teeth bleaching only works for the teeth that do not have crowns, veneers, or dental bondings on the visual surfaces of the teeth.  Crowns and veneers are made out of ceramic, therefore, they will always maintain their current color. Bondings are made of a resin plastic and will also not whiten.  If the bondings are small, the teeth can be bleached, and the bondings can be replaced to match the new bleach shade.  If you have large fillings on the front teeth, dental crowns may be used to make the teeth the shade that you are looking for.  Veneers are indicated when there are changes in the color and shape of the teeth.  However, since veneers only cover the front surface, changes such as the correction of rotated teeth or large fillings are best corrected with individual crowns.  If you have any questions regarding your mouth, contact our office for your own esthetic evaluation.
