Are silver fillings harmful to my health?

One of the biggest controversies in dentistry over the past 10 years has been whether or not silver fillings (dental amalgams) are harmful to your body.  Silver fillings have been used for over 100 years.  However, since they do contain small amounts of mercury, many patients are afraid of mercury poison.  In August of 2009, the American Dental Association released a statement that "Dental amalgam is considered a safe, affordable and durable material that has been used to restore the teeth of more than 100 million Americans...amalgam is a valuable, viable and safe choice for dental patients."  These statements are supported by numerous studies and systematic reviews. While dental amalgams do not match the color of teeth and can be considered "unaesthetic", they are not only safe but predictable.

Functions of Silver Fillings

Silver fillings are indicated in areas under a lot of stress as well any place where the tooth cannot be kept dry from saliva while the filling is being placed.  White fillings do not cure properly when they are exposed to ANY moisture.  They are also not as strong as the silver, gold, or ceramic alternatives.  Alternatives to the white and silver fillings are ceramic (or gold) inlays, onlays, and crowns that are made outside of the mouth and are not susceptible to moisture contamination. Ceramic inlays, onlays, and crowns are great options to avoid the silver color and look very natural. The silver is also considerably less expensive than any of the other dental treatments.

Why do we still place silver fillings? As a prosthodontist, and a dentist, that prides myself in providing my patients with fillings that will last a long time (10,20,30,40 50 years), in certain situations, there simply is not a filling material that measures up and lasts as long as the silver.
