Can I Over Bleach my Teeth?

Can I over bleach my teeth?

The answer is yes, yes you can absolutely over bleach your teeth. In fact, some people have gone as far as to label this obsession with excessively bleaching as Bleachorexia. By over bleaching, you can harm the outer layer of tooth structure called the enamel.  This causes the enamel to become thin, weakened, and microscopically pitted.  The teeth appear blotchy and make the superficial crack lines much more noticeable.  In addition, if you are someone who likes blueberries or red wine, your teeth will reflect the pigments of red and blue colors much more.  Also, by excessive bleaching, your teeth can become very sensitive to hot and cold.

In today's society, we are told that bright and white teeth are healthy.  This is not the case when bleaching is taken to the extremes.  Just because a product is over the counter, does not make it safe to use all of the time, or in conjunction with several other whitening agents.  For example, whitening toothpaste works by adding mini-abrasives into the toothpaste formulas.  Therefore, when you are brushing your teeth, you are working to remove superficial stains with micro-sandpaper.  This can be particularly harmful to postmenopausal women that have existing thinning of their enamel and sensitivity.

How do I know if how I am bleaching is safe?

Ask your dentist to examine your teeth and make the appropriate recommendations for you.  For example, if you are someone that has a lot of wear or cavities, bleaching might not be a safe option for you until the teeth have been properly taken care of.  Bleaching trays made by your dentist have been clinically proven to provide the lowest sensitivity, with the best result over time.  In some cases, the desired bleaching results cannot be achieved by just bleaching alone.  This is when dental bonding, veneers, and crowns can be used to achieve your best smile.
