An inlay or onlay is an ideal treatment option to restore a tooth compromised by decay or a fracture but may not yet need a crown. Inlays and onlays allow you to retain more of your natural tooth structure while providing a reliable restoration that strengthens your tooth and preserves aesthetics.

Dr. Link-Bindo customizes your inlay or onlay with impressions taken of your tooth. Then she sends her specifications to a trusted dental lab that handcrafts your restoration. The process typically takes two appointments at our Doylestown dental office and about two to three weeks to complete.

The Differences Between Inlays and Onlays

The primary difference between inlays and onlays is their coverage.

Think of an inlay as a customized filling, restoring small areas of tooth decay or damage within the cusps of your tooth. An inlay typically provides better durability, strength, and longevity than a filling, which is why Dr. Link-Bindo often recommends them.

Conversely, an onlay is designed to restore larger areas of decay and fits over the cusps of your tooth. It's able to restore strength, durability, and aesthetics to your tooth like a crown, but it doesn't cover as much tooth structure as a crown that fits over the tooth entirely.

How to Care for Your Inlay or Onlay

The good news is that inlays and onlays are very easy to care for with routine brushing and flossing. Regular checkups with your Doylestown dentist will also ensure the health and longevity of your inlay or onlay.

Avoiding hard or sticky foods will also help keep your restoration intact. Cut hard foods into bite-sized pieces that won't compromise your natural teeth or any dental restorations.
