Should I get a dental implant?

If you are someone who is missing a tooth, or may need a tooth removed in the future, dental implants are something you may want to consider.  Dental implants are titanium roots that are placed into your jawbone.  An intermediate piece called an abutment is then used to anchor a tooth or crown to the titanium root. Two of the biggest questions I am often asked are: how long does it take, and will it hurt? The length of time it takes for a dental implant relies on several factors. These factors include whether the implant can be placed right away and whether a bone graft will be needed before the implant is placed. The success of a dental implant relies heavily upon around how much bone is available to anchor the titanium root. In some cases, a bone graft is needed to rebuild bone that is lost.

If you are missing a tooth in the upper molar and premolar area, a procedure called a sinus lift may be necessary. Our sinuses expand as we get older and this can cause a lack of physical height for the implant. If necessary, a bone graft material is placed to grow bone underneath the sinuses. The overall healing process can take from 3 months to a year, depending on what procedures are necessary. Once the area has healed, an impression is made, and then the tooth that attaches to the dental implant is made.

As someone who has dental implants, my personal experiences are that the area will feel sore and swollen for a week to two weeks.  The swelling peaks by the third day.  Bruising following surgery can also occasionally occur. Each person’s experience is different.

I personally chose dental implants because I wanted a long lasting solution that did not involve wearing false teeth permanently or modifying my original teeth for a bridge. Additionally, dental implants help to prevent bone loss.

Implants are one of the biggest advances in dentistry and can look and feel like a natural tooth, making the healing process worthwhile. Implants also allow you to chew naturally and can function just like your natural teeth.
