Dental emergencies can be the worst. They tend to happen at the most inconvenient times, usually when you are away on vacation. In this blog post I would like to discuss some helpful suggestions if you don’t have access to a dentist right away. The best solution is to always see your dentist; however, during the holidays or a vacation this isn’t always possible. Here is how to handle certain dental emergency situations:
You will want to treat the symptoms. If you are having hot and cold sensitivity you will want to avoid anything hot or cold. If you are in pain and able to take Motrin and Tylenol, these two medications can be alternated. If there is a sharp spot or the area is sensitive to touch you can get dental wax for braces at your local drug store. If you are missing a filling you may also be able to use one of the over the counter temporary filling materials also sold at the drug store.
Did the crown come from a tooth or an implant? If the crown is from a natural tooth, you can temporarily hold the tooth in place with either Fixodent or toothpaste. If the tooth is very sensitive, Sensodyne can be helpful. Be very careful with over the counter cements you can find in the drug store. These cements are very different than the ones we use in a dental office, they are often extremely difficult to remove (sometimes they cannot be removed at all) and they can damage the crown if it is not placed properly. Anytime there is a loose crown the most important thing is to be careful not to swallow it. The crown should be taken out at night. Unless the tooth is firmly in place, it may be best to leave the crown out until a dentist can re-cement it properly. If it is an implant crown, Fixodent and toothpaste are two materials that will not damage the implant crown.
If you have sore spots from a denture, the best solution is to leave the denture out and let the area heal. You can also rinse with half a teaspoon of salt in a cup with some warm water. If it is a denture that was placed right after extractions, the denture should not be taken out other than to rinse the denture for the first 24-48 hours. Over the counter products such as EZO denture cushions, Snug denture cushions and Sea bond can also be purchased for temporary relief.
