A prosthodontist has years of advanced training in the restoration and replacement of teeth to enhance your smile and restore full function. Prosthodontics is the only specialty recognized by the American Dental Association for crowns, dental implants, and esthetics.
Training consists of four years of dental school, followed by an additional three years of intense specialized training in a graduate program accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA). A prosthodontist typically coordinates an overall treatment strategy that includes periodontists, general dentists, endodontists, pediatric dentists, oral surgeons, and other specialties.
What services do they perform?
Prosthodontists perform a wide variety of comprehensive restorative and esthetic services. Some of these include:
- Replacement of lost teeth
- Cosmetic dentistry
- Complex care management that involves multiple specialists
- Implant-supported complete and partial dentures
- Traumatic injuries
- Maxillofacial prosthetic procedures such as oral cancer reconstruction and continuing care
